There are very few clothing brands that have a noble message behind the brand. Many do it for profit and could care less about people’s lives. However, this brand is different. I had the pleasure of sitting down with the owner and talking about what her brand represents. To say the least, I was completely blown away by her noble intent and what she’s doing to help bring the world closer together. After the pictures I saw of what her brand has done with people’s lives (ask to see the pictures), I couldn’t help but smile and feel a light of hope.
Owner Rakiyt “Raki” Zakari (Rocky-ette) is a Norfolk native who moved to the Washington D.C. area as a teenager. She credits her upbringing in Hampton Roads, her Nigerian roots and exposure to the vibrancy of DC as inspiration for Food Clothing + Shelter. The shop is a multicultural brand that incorporates her love of nostalgia, adventure, travel, and culture into apparel, accessories, and other gifts.
Raki holds a BA in Fashion Merchandising and has studied Experimental Design in London at Central Saint Martins. With over 13 years of experience in the fashion industry, Rakiyt has collaborated on projects with Nike, National Geographic, Amnesty International, and the U.S. Department of State. Her goal for Food Clothing + Shelter is to “create an immersive experience that will leave a lasting impression akin to stamps on a passport.”
Even though I sat down with her a week ago, I’m still very excited for her brand to take off. If you ever find yourself in Norfolk, I highly encourage you to walk in and see this amazing brand for yourself. Her “I Am David” brand has a message that will enchant you. Allow her to tell you about herself and decide for yourself if I’m spot on or not.
You can find her store front at Selden Market, located on Plume Street next to Slover Library in Downtown Norfolk.
